So what’s my story?
I was never overweight as a child but certainly never skinny. Yet, that all changed when I started college. One bad habit I picked up was eating from the drive-thru in the early morning after a hard night studying. My excuse was that every other restaurant was closed.
Over the course of six years—college and graduate school combined—I gained 25 pounds. On average that’s four pounds per year, which is easy to do.
Here I was, about to embark on my professional career as a physical therapist, and 25 pounds overweight. How was I going to inspire others to be their healthiest selves if I didn’t strive for optimum health for myself?
I felt like a fraud.
So what did I do? I turned into a diet junky by completing practically every diet plan that existed. Nutrisystem, the Zone, the South Beach Diet, Atkins…. You name it, I tried it. I even did a medical weight loss program where I received bi-weekly vitamin B12 shots in my bum. Yes, I really did this!
Eventually I started working in a gym where I befriended numerous fitness competitors and bikini models. I emulated their lifestyles, eating the same foods as they did, doing the same exercises. I even copied their sleep schedules. Soon I had the body of my dreams. There was only one problem. I was starving.
I had constant headaches from carbohydrate depletion. I took naps at lunchtime due to exhaustion, and would get home from work and not remember how I got there.
The deprivation finally won.
I bought myself a large pizza and ate the entire thing. For a few short minutes I felt great. Unfortunately, the euphoria didn’t last long once I’d realized what I’d done.
This binge eating marked the beginning of a two-year battle with bulimia.
I desperately needed a reset button so I checked myself into the Optimum Health Institute in San Diego, CA. There, I learned to let go of my warped body image issues and focus on regaining my health. It saved my life.
Nobody knows more about the human body than Mariah. Her physical therapy background makes her a stand out compared to all other personal trainers and health coaches.
Fast forward to four babies (four C-sections) later. I now had 50 pounds to lose in order to regain my health. After having a baby your hormones are raging, you’re sleep deprived, stressed and overwrought. You barely have time to shower let alone exercise.
As a physical therapist with years of education under my belt, I knew I had the smarts and awareness to create an epic weight loss program for myself, even with my crazy busy lifestyle. And I was right. Over the course of nine months, I lost those 50 pounds.
Here’s the great news.
You don’t have to choose between another diet program and the sanity of your family. With a husband and four daughters, my life is proof this can be done without turning the house upside down.
